Measuring

What we can measure, we can manage, and therefore our first step has been to measure the climate impact of our value chain. In 2021 we started the calculations according to the GHG Protocol (Greenhouse Gas Protocol*) which quantifies the greenhouse gases (Scope 1 & Scope 2) that occur from our business activities directly and indirectly.

Climate footprint

Operational control approach

Espresso House Group applies the operational control approach and the emission assessment cover all of our markets including coffee shops, offices, the bakery and the roastery.

Following the GHG protocol

Following the GHG protocol, emissions are calculated according to both the market-based and location-based method. We have so far calculated Scope 1 and Scope 2 for 2019 and 2020, using 2019 as our base year. This is due to 2020 being an exceptional year with limited operations throughout the pandemic.

Going forward

Going forward we will continue to map our impact and to also include Scope 3 emissions that includes the indirect emissions occurring both upstream and downstream in the value chain. This is where we will find the largest climate footprint. Our aim is to make a complete carbon footprint assessment that includes all scopes.

Science based target commitment

Espresso House Group has decided to set emission reduction targets in line with climate science, and as a step towards this we have in March 2022 signed and submitted the commitment letter to the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi)**. With this initial commitment we show our ambition to work towards setting science-based emission reduction targets in line with the SBTi criteria and recommendations.
